A Hint of Adapted History
For the first time, IL Duomo Novara is currently carrying pieces from Maison Alaïa’s latest collection.
Azzedine Alaïa is known as the late French designer predominantly remembered for his remarkably precise hand in couture tailoring. Throughout his tenure he was known for crafting some of the most intricately designed iconic pieces that one would assume were seldom or never to be recreated. The reality however was that many of these pieces went through the process of being made in several versions in production although only one would actually make it to the runway. Some of the brand’s successful pieces were always revisited in following seasons, in compliance to his studio’s request in aim of capitalising on a certain moment but they would always turn into something different.
“ He would always say ‘yes okay’ and then he’d change everything, because he hated repeating himself, ” explained Caroline Fabre Bazin Maison Alaïa’s Studio Director.
Which meant to say a lot of his greatest pieces, fabrics & patterns were held in the archive containing several different versions than the ones released. The Spring Summer 2020 RTW collection is a nod to that vast archive. One of these quintessential couture pieces was the perfecto jacket which Bazin claims came in many different style and patterns, for SS20 it was presented in its original pattern but rendered in silver python. A lot of the other themes hinted towards pieces from his collections made during 1991-1992. The use of Japanese denim and polka dots are prevalent in dresses and a 3 piece dark denim suit which reference his Spring 1991 collection. Some of his other signature techniques and pieces were also eased into the collection including the nipped-in waist , the embroidered jacquard dress, intricate leather pleating, complex ruffling & the raffia cage skirt , all modified to meet price points of a commercial audience. Tones of the collection range from black, to nudes , to denim with hints of red and purple.
The collection itself is an ode to original French tailoring blended with hints of couture techniques on a commercial scale. The Alaïa Spring Summer 2020 collection is available in our stores but is not sold online. Please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org for more info.
